Dr. Akter is currently a licensed psychologist in New York state. She earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) from Widener University’s Institute of Graduate Clinical Psychology. Prior to her doctorate, she graduated from Hunter College with a concentration in political science and attended Columbia University for a post-baccalaureate in psychology. Dr. Akter currently sees adolescents, adults, and couples virtually in her New York private practice, Akter Psychotherapy. 

Dr. Akter’s doctoral training and years of delivering psychotherapy have provided her with extensive experience helping adolescents and adults with anxiety, depression, substance abuse, trauma, identity exploration, and adjustment to life transitions, as well as innumerable other needs. Her integrative approach is well-suited for addressing interpersonal and multicultural issues. She works from a social justice-oriented and trauma-informed lens to provide individuals and couples with culturally competent treatment.
